Jeff Jackson, long considered a rising star in North Carolina Politics, put up an impressive display in North Carolina’s Attorney General Race, holding it for Democrats.
Jeff Jackson defeated Republican Dan Bishop in North Carolina’s Attorney General Race, maintaining a Democratic winning streak that stretches back over a century. Even as Donald Trump defeated Kamala Harris in the state 51%-48% en route to the White House, Jackson won by a similarly comfortable 52%-48% margin. Both Jackson and Bishop serve in Congress with Jackson representing North Carolina’s 14th Congressional District in the Charlotte suburbs and Bishop North Carolina’s 8th Congressional District which includes exurban and rural areas east of Charlotte. Jackson decided to run for Attorney General after North Carolina Republicans redraw the Congressional map. They targeted his district specifically by extending the boundaries into the deep red exurbs west of Charlotte and subsequently changing the district’s partisan lean from a double digit Biden district to a double digit Trump district, effectively forcing him to run for another office. Since Incumbent Democrat Josh Stein opted to run for Governor he left the Attorney General race open, allowing Jackson to run for the position. Throughout the campaign Jackson highlighted that he was a military veteran who served in Afghanistan and an active member of the North Carolina Army National Guard. He also emphasized his experience as a Prosecutor in Gaston County. His opponent, Dan Bishop, on the other hand had a difficult time winning over swing voters in part because of the fact that he authored the infamous “Bathroom bill” which cost North Carolina billions of dollars. Jackson’s win establishes him as a strong candidate for higher office down the line, possibly in North Carolina’s US Senate contest in 2028.
